Legba’s Gate
Spirit work rooted in ancestral wisdom, love and liberation
There are moments when life brings us to a threshold.
An old way has ended, but the next path has not yet fully opened.
You may be carrying grief, spiritual disconnection, heavy energy, ancestral longing or a sense that something in your life needs to be released, cleansed, remembered or brought back into right relationship.
Legba’s Gate is a space of ritual healing, spiritual accompaniment, ancestral remembrance and sacred preparation.
It brings together prayer, meditation, energy healing, ceremony, music, herbs, water, fire, spiritual cleansing and the wisdom held within African-Caribbean, ancestral and contemplative traditions.
This is work for the whole person.
Body and spirit.
Grief and joy.
Wounds and power.
The ancestors who came before us and the life that is still trying to be born through us.
Legba’s Gate is a threshold: somewhere to pause, listen and meet what is calling for attention with reverence and courage.
Healing is not only about feeling better. Sometimes it is about remembering who you are, what you carry and what you are no longer willing to carry.

Why the gate?
In Haitian Vodou, Papa Legba is honoured at the threshold.
He opens the way for communication, relationship and movement between worlds. He is associated with gates, pathways, keys, language and the crossroads.
Nothing begins without the gate opening.
I chose the name Legba’s Gate in reverence and gratitude.
The gate also carries a wider human meaning.
We encounter gates whenever life asks us to move from one state of being into another.
A gate may appear through:
- Bereavement or loss.
- Recovery from addiction or trauma.
- The ending of a relationship.
- Burnout or spiritual exhaustion.
- A change in identity, work or family life.
- Reconnection with ancestry or culture.
- A decision that reason alone cannot make.
- The desire to release an old burden.
- A longing for meaning, direction or renewed spiritual life.
Some gates open gently.
Others require truth, courage, prayer, protection or the willingness to place something into the fire and let it end.
The gate does not decide the path for you. It makes passage possible.
Born from lived transformation
Legba’s Gate grew from more than twenty years of personal transformation through depression, addiction, existential crisis, therapy, meditation, community and a lifelong search for meaning.
I know what it is to become disconnected from yourself.
I know what it is to seek relief in things that eventually create their own suffering.
I know what it is to question whether life possesses any deeper meaning and to encounter parts of yourself that you would rather avoid.
Spiritual practice did not remove every struggle from my life.
It gave me ways to remain present within it.
Zen taught me to sit still when I wanted to escape, to face what is, embrace and appreciate my life as it is and experience the profound interdependence of life .
Therapy helped me meet wounded and hidden parts of myself with greater understanding and compassion.
Recovery taught me honesty, responsibility and the possibility of beginning again.
Reiki brought me into relationship with energy and the healing potential of working with it
Catholicism gave me prayer, sacrament, mercy and relationship with the Most High.
My ancestors and Haitian Vodou brought me into living relationship with spirit, lineage, service, sacred power and the gates between worlds.
Community and Ubuntu taught me that healing cannot be completed alone, embodying the interdependence I first found in Zen.
Legba’s Gate has grown from the meeting of these experiences.
I offer practices that have helped carry me through fire.
Healing, remembrance and liberation
Legba’s Gate is rooted in the understanding that healing is both personal and collective.
Our suffering does not arise only from within us.
We are shaped by families, communities, histories, cultures and systems. Racism, colonialism, displacement, religious harm, poverty, violence and cultural erasure can enter our bodies and relationships.
Authentic spirituality should not be used to deny or bypass these realities.
It should not tell people that every injustice can be overcome by changing their vibration, thinking positively or purchasing the correct ritual product.
Nor should healing require us to become quieter, more compliant or more capable of tolerating what diminishes us.
Spiritual work can help us remember our worth, reclaim our voice, encounter inherited strength and release burdens that were never ours to carry alone.
It can help us move towards a more authentic and unapologetic expression of who we are.
This is why love and liberation belong together within Legba’s Gate.
Love without truth becomes sentimentality.
Liberation without care can reproduce the same hardness from which we are trying to become free.
Our healing should return us to life with more dignity, agency, courage and capacity to love.

Ritual Healing Circles
Ritual Healing Circles are at the heart of Legba’s Gate.
They create space for spiritual practice, emotional truth, ancestral presence and collective transformation.
A circle may include:
- Grounding and meditation.
- Libation and prayer to the Most High.
- Calling upon the ancestors.
- Acknowledgement of earth, water, air and fire.
- Drumming, music, rhythm or shared sound.
- Spoken intention and personal testimony.
- Symbolic release of burdens into fire.
- Cleansing with Florida Water, herbs, smoke or sacred water.
- A ritual bath, herbal wash or anointing.
- Ceremonial cutting of cords or bindings.
- Silence, reflection and witnessing.
- Declarations of life, freedom and renewed intention.
- Shared food, conversation and laughter.
A ceremonial blade may sometimes be used symbolically within cord-cutting or protective ritual. It is handled carefully, never directed towards participants and never introduced without explanation.
Each circle has its own purpose.
One may centre grief and remembrance.
Another may focus upon release, protection, freedom, spiritual renewal or crossing into a new chapter.
Each ritual or ceremony is created through presence, prayer, intention and the willingness of those gathered to meet one another truthfully.
After the fire has burned and the formal ritual has ended, we may sit close, break bread, laugh and speak about what matters.
This too is sacred.
A healing circle is not only where we lay something down. It is where we remember that we do not have to carry it alone.
Ritual Healing Circles are not group therapy, formal Vodou ceremonies or a replacement for mental-health support.
They are spiritually grounded community spaces with clear boundaries, invitational participation and respect for the different beliefs and experiences present within the circle.
Fire, water, earth, air and sound
Ritual gives physical form to inner experience.
Fire can receive what is ready to end.
Water can cleanse, cool, bless and renew.
Earth can hold, steady and receive.
Air carries breath, prayer, smoke and spoken intention.
Sound gathers people into shared rhythm and changes the atmosphere of a space.
These are not merely decorative additions.
They allow us to encounter meaning through the body and senses rather than only through thought.
You may understand what needs to be released but still feel it held within your body.
You may know intellectually that a loved one has died while part of you has not found a way to say goodbye.
You may have made a decision but still need to mark the crossing.
Ritual helps us say:
This mattered.
This happened.
This is what I am laying down.
This is what I am asking to receive.
This is the life I am choosing now.
Sometimes the body needs an experience of change before the mind can fully believe that change has begun.
Ancestors, remembrance and the unseen
Our lives did not begin with us.
We carry names, faces, stories, strengths, wounds and ways of surviving that travelled through generations before reaching our hands.
Ancestral relationship may offer belonging, guidance and continuity.
It can also carry grief.
Some of us know the names and histories of those who came before us. Others have lineages interrupted by migration, enslavement, colonialism, adoption, family separation or silence.
Some ancestors were loving and protective.
Others caused harm or passed forward patterns that we may now need to end.
Honouring the ancestors does not require us to idealise them.
We can offer gratitude for the life that reached us while refusing to repeat what caused suffering.
Ancestral practice through Legba’s Gate may include:
- Creating or tending an ancestral altar.
- Offering water, flowers, light, food or drink.
- Libation and spoken remembrance.
- Prayer for peace and elevation.
- Remembering a particular person who has died.
- Exploring family stories and inherited values.
- Grieving what was lost, hidden or never passed down.
- Recognising ancestral strengths and gifts.
- Releasing inherited burdens or harmful patterns.
- Considering what we wish to pass forward.
- Ceremony connected with death, remembrance or significant anniversaries.
Our remembrance ceremonies may draw upon African and Caribbean ancestral practice, Haitian Vodou, fok Catholic traditions and other forms of prayer and remembrance that have shaped my spiritual life.
An altar may hold photographs and treasured belongings alongside flowers, fruit, water, rum, candles and other offerings.
Flame may be lit to guide.
Water offered to cool and refresh.
Rum poured in remembrance.
Prayer lifted for rest and peace.
Laughter and food also have a place. Remembering the dead does not have to mean creating a room without joy.
The ancestors are not only remembered through sorrow. They are remembered whenever life continues through us with courage, beauty and love.
Florida Water
Florida Water is one of the central preparations created through Legba’s Gate.
It is a fragrant spiritual cologne used for cleansing, prayer, blessing, protection, altar work, ritual bathing and changing the atmosphere of a person or space.
My Florida Water is handcrafted in small batches.
It begins with Wray & Nephew white rum, bringing warmth, potency and Caribbean fire.
The rum is infused with carefully chosen botanicals, herbs and resins before being strained and refined. The preparation is prayed over and charged upon my altar, then completed with Holy Water and my own blend of essential oils.
The fragrance carries bright citrus and spice, warmed by woods and sacred resins.
It is sharp, enlivening and cleansing—created to awaken the senses and shift the energy of a space.
A small amount of vegetable glycerine gives the finished preparation a gentler touch upon the skin and helps the fragrance remain present for longer. Spiritually, it also brings sweetness: an invitation towards blessing, favour, kindness and harmony.
Each batch may develop slightly as I refine the preparation, respond to the ingredients and listen to what the work requires.
This is part of what makes it a living, handmade offering rather than a mass-produced fragrance.
Sacred Fire. Ancestral Clarity. Spiritual Power.
Florida Water may be used to:
- Cleanse the hands before prayer or ritual.
- Refresh the body and personal energy.
- Anoint thresholds and doorways.
- Clean an altar or spiritual tools.
- Add to spiritual bath water.
- Bless a room or gathering.
- Support meditation and prayer.
- Refresh the atmosphere after conflict or emotional intensity.
- Prepare for ancestral or devotional practice.
- Carry a sense of protection and spiritual presence when travelling.
It is supplied as an external-use preparation and should not be swallowed.
Because it contains alcohol, it is flammable and must be kept away from flames while wet. Care should also be taken around eyes, children, animals, allergies and sensitive skin.

Oils, baths and other sacred preparations
Alongside Florida Water, I create companion preparations for cleansing, blessing, protection, healing and personal ritual.
These may include:
Anointing oils
Botanicals and essential oils are blended into a nourishing carrier base before being blessed, prayed over and charged upon the altar.
Anointing oils may be used upon the body, candles, altar objects or spiritual tools according to the purpose of the preparation.
Spiritual baths
Herbs, salts, flowers, oils and prayers are brought together to support cleansing, soothing, release, protection or renewed blessing.
A spiritual bath can be an intimate ritual of return: an opportunity to slow down, approach the body reverently and mark the intention to wash away what no longer belongs.
Cleansing and protection preparations
These may be used to support boundaries, clear heavy energy and restore a greater sense of spiritual steadiness.
Blessing and abundance preparations
These are created to accompany prayer for greater openness, harmony, opportunity, creativity and the capacity to receive what supports life.
Every preparation is made with attention to both its spiritual purpose and its physical ingredients.
I will always distinguish spiritual intention from guaranteed outcome.
A preparation can accompany your prayer and action. It cannot control life, remove another person’s free will or promise a particular result.
The bottle is not the whole ritual. Your relationship, intention, prayer and action are part of the work.

Spiritual counselling and accompaniment
Not everybody comes to Legba’s Gate seeking a circle or physical preparation.
Sometimes you need somewhere to speak openly about your spiritual life.
You may be:
- Questioning what you believe.
- Reconnecting with ancestry or inherited tradition.
- Trying to reconcile more than one spiritual path.
- Recovering after religious harm.
- Exploring an experience that felt spiritually significant.
- Seeking a grounded spiritual practice.
- Moving through grief, change or existential crisis.
- Trying to discern the difference between intuition, fear and trauma.
- Wondering how to remain spiritually open without losing your grounding.
Spiritual accompaniment offers space to explore these experiences without ridicule, pressure or the expectation that you must accept my interpretation.
We may draw upon reflection, meditation, prayer, imagery, embodied awareness, ancestral exploration or simple ritual.
Although I am a qualified counsellor and bring many years of therapeutic experience, spiritual accompaniment through Legba’s Gate is not the same service as counselling or psychotherapy.
We will be clear about the kind of relationship we are entering.
I may walk beside you and help you listen, but your spiritual path remains your own.

Reiki and energy healing
Reiki offers a gentler doorway into the work.
A session creates space to slow down, rest and receive care without needing to explain or analyse everything you are carrying.
You remain fully clothed.
Reiki may be offered through light touch upon agreed areas of the body or without physical contact.
Before beginning, we will discuss:
- What has brought you to the session.
- Whether you are comfortable with touch.
- Areas of the body that should not be approached.
- Physical, sensory or cultural needs.
- Whether you would prefer silence, music, prayer or spoken guidance.
- Anything that may help you feel safer and more settled.
Consent continues throughout the session.
You can change your mind, ask for more physical distance or end the session at any point.
People experience Reiki differently. You may notice warmth, emotion, tingling, imagery, deep relaxation or very little at all.
There is no correct response.
Reiki is a complementary spiritual and wellbeing practice. It is not medical treatment, diagnosis or a substitute for appropriate physical or mental-health care.
Sometimes healing begins with allowing yourself to be held by stillness.

Cleansing, blessing and personal ritual
There are experiences that ordinary conversation does not fully contain.
A new home may need to be welcomed.
A difficult chapter may need to be closed.
A relationship, role or identity may need to be released.
An altar may need to be established.
A loss may need to be acknowledged.
A promise may need to be spoken aloud.
Personal or space-cleansing work may include:
- Prayer and spoken blessing.
- Florida Water or Holy Water.
- Herbs, resins, incense or smoke.
- Candles and flame.
- Bells, drumming or other sound.
- Reiki and energetic cleansing.
- Libation.
- Anointing.
- Meditation and reflection.
- Symbolic release or cord-cutting.
- Attention to doors, windows and thresholds.
- Establishing intentions for the life of a space.
The ritual will be shaped around your circumstances, beliefs, boundaries and the people involved.
Smoke, scent, flame and liquid will only be used where physically appropriate. Allergies, ventilation, fire safety, pets, children and shared use of the space will be considered.
A blessing cannot replace the practical work a situation requires.
A cleansed home still needs boundaries.
A ritual of release may still need grief.
A prayer for opportunity must still be accompanied by action.
Spirit opens possibilities. We participate through the way we live.
Spiritually open and spiritually real
Legba’s Gate is spiritually open, but it is not spiritually empty.
I believe in God—the Most High (though not in a dualistic way).
I believe that our relationships with ancestors, spirits and the sacred can be real, living and transformative.
At the same time, I do not require everybody who approaches Legba’s Gate to understand these experiences exactly as I do.
You may experience ritual through God, spirit, energy, ancestry, culture, psychology, symbolism, embodiment or a combination of these.
You may arrive with faith, uncertainty or respectful scepticism.
What matters is that we do not pretend.
I will not hide the spiritual foundations of the work.
You will not be pressured into beliefs or practices that do not belong to you.
Many names, one ground
My spiritual life is rooted in several traditions.
I was raised within Catholic Christianity and remain connected to its prayer, sacraments, saints, ancestors and contemplative heart.
Soto Zen has shaped my life for almost fifteen years (and meditation practice for 20), teaching me stillness, discipline, compassion, non-attachment and the sacredness of ordinary experience.
Reiki brought me into deeper relationship with energy and healing presence.
My African-Caribbean heritage led me towards ancestral practice and Haitian Vodou.
My Irish and Celtic inheritance also carries relationships with land, prayer, grief, music, story and the presence of those who came before.
I do not believe that these traditions are identical.
Each possesses its own history, language, community and integrity.
I do believe that I have encountered the sacred through more than one doorway.
I sometimes describe this as:
Many names, one ground.
Legba’s Gate is for people who may also live between spiritual worlds.
You should not have to sever one inheritance in order to honour another.
But integration requires more than taking whatever we find attractive.
It requires respect, discipline, relationship and honesty about where a practice comes from.
My relationship with Haitian Vodou
Haitian Vodou is a living African diasporic religion shaped through African spiritual traditions, Haitian history, resistance, family, community, relationship with the ancestors and service to the lwa.
It is far from the sinister caricature created by colonialism, racism and horror films. Nor is it an aesthetic, costume or collection of exotic spiritual techniques. It is a beautiful, holistic Caribbean indigenous spiritual system with roots in West African Vodun, Catholicism and the spirituality of the indigenous Taino people.
I practice as a non-initiated Vodouisant and lay practitioner, in relationship with an authentic Vodou Sosyete (house), Fos Fe Yo We, and as an ongoing student of the tradition under Mambo Chita Tan. I am not a houngan, mambo or Vodou priest and do not have access to oath-bound teachings reserved for initates (though if the spirits guide it and life aligns, I would be honoured to initiate one day).
Where somebody needs guidance or work beyond my role, I will be honest about that and can suggest respected, authentic initiated teachers (including Mambo Chita Tan and others within our house and wider family).
My practice includes prayer, offerings, libation, humble service to the lwa, petitions, ancestral devotion, spiritual cleansing and the maintenance of my own altar and devotional relationships.
These relationships shape Legba’s Gate.
They do not mean that everyone who works with me must practice Vodou or develop relationships with the same spirits.
Consent, dignity and spiritual agency
Spiritual power should never be used to make another person feel powerless.
You have the right to:
- Understand what is being offered.
- Ask what a ritual or practice means.
- Decline touch, prayer or a particular activity.
- Pass during a circle.
- Remain silent.
- Question an interpretation.
- Request an alternative to smoke, scent or bodily practice.
- Pause or leave a session.
- Take time before purchasing or booking anything.
- Decide that my approach is not right for you.
- Seek another spiritual or professional perspective.
What this work can and cannot offer
Legba’s Gate can offer:
- Ritual and symbolic ways to mark change.
- Spiritual and ancestral reflection.
- A relationship in which your spiritual life is taken seriously.
- Prayer, blessing and sacred preparation.
- Rest, grounding and energetic care.
- Community witnessing and collective ritual.
- Support in creating a more meaningful personal practice.
- Opportunities to release, remember, recommit and begin again.
It cannot guarantee:
- Medical or psychological healing.
- Money, employment or legal outcomes.
- Control over another person’s decisions.
- Removal of every difficulty from your life.
- Certainty about the intentions of spirits or ancestors.
- A life untouched by grief, injustice or uncertainty.
Legba’s Gate, counselling and Ubuntu
My work has several connected but distinct doorways.
My counselling practice offers confidential therapeutic work grounded in humanistic, relational, experiential, trauma-informed and decolonial approaches.
Ubuntu is a Liverpool-based community for Black, Brown, mixed-heritage and other people of colour, centred upon healing, culture, spirituality, connection and collective care.
Legba’s Gate is the explicitly spiritual and ritual dimension of my work, including ritual healing circles, energy work and sacred preparations.
These parts of my life influence one another, but they are not interchangeable.

About me
I am Alan Kaishin Crawford: a counsellor, lecturer, healing-circle facilitator, Reiki Master, musician, community activist and founder of Ubuntu.
I am a mixed-race man of African-Caribbean and Irish heritage from Liverpool.
My life and work sit at the crossroads of therapy, spirituality, ancestry, culture, social justice, creativity and community healing.
The Buddhist name Kaishin, meaning Ocean Heart, was given to me when I received the Zen precepts.
It reminds me of the heart’s capacity to become spacious enough to hold grief and joy, stillness and fire, individuality and ancestry, without needing to divide life into fragments.
My work is informed by professional training, lived experience and long spiritual practice.
But I remain a student.
I do not stand above the crossroads holding every answer.
I meet people there as another human being who has learned something about loss, transformation, prayer and beginning again.
What I offer is presence, experience, reverence and a willingness to meet what is real.
